How often are the poor pitied while the rich are envied? Though poverty has its challenges, how often do those who possess less seem to express greater joy in life than those who possess much and are living with the stresses of managing it with fear of losing it? Now, I by no means wish to downplay life’s struggles for the down-and-out, but there is a need to consider where the poor may not be so poor.
Certainly, there are those who are poor as they are lacking in material possessions. However, though there are daily needs to be met of which our Heavenly Father is aware (Matthew 6:32) and of which we need to learn a lesson of contentment (1 Timothy 6:8; Hebrews 13:5), in the final scheme of things, how much significance is there in most of what is possessed?
Even for those who seem to think godliness is the means to gain, remember Paul’s exhortation where we read. . .
“(6) But godliness with contentment is great gain, (7) for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” (1 Timothy 6:6-7 ESV)
What does that tell us regarding the significance of the stuff we accumulate in life? In the scheme of God’s eternal plan, it doesn’t really amount to anything at all. It will all be left behind at some point.
With regard to the rich, Paul went on to urge. . .
“(17) As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. (18) They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, (19) thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.” (1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV)
So, where is our focus? Is it on the uncertain wealth of this temporary sphere or focused in steadfast trust in God and the true life and eternity He has assured? What is of the utmost importance to us? If we are going to be rich, may it be in faith and the good works that would accompany that faith as we trust in the Heavenly imperishable treasure that awaits us!
Have a great day PUTTING STOCK IN GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY, NOT OUR STUFF!
