Again, as we have noted the last two days, how often have the poor been pitied while the rich are envied? Though there are those who live in spiritual poverty — refusing to acknowledge sin for what it is as they live after their own fleshly desires (note Ephesians 2:3) — there is a sense in which our spiritual poverty needs to be acknowledged. We are in need! That must be our humble admission, or we will most likely not be open to the provision of the blessings money cannot buy!
As Jesus began to list what have become known as the beatitudes (or as I like to say: attitudes to be), note where He began. We read. . .
“(3) Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3 ESV)
Jesus did not say, “Pity those who are poor in spirit.” He stated they are blessed, and it is they who possess the kingdom of Heaven. These are the poor who acknowledge their spiritual poverty and know where to turn to have the need met! This is where Jesus began this list because this is where we need to humbly begin to be drawn to God. If we fail to sense this spiritual need we will tend to turn to living a self-sustained life. However, we must humbly admit we cannot make it on our own. Our salvation and eternal hope only come in their connection through Christ. (i.e. John 14:6; Acts 4:12) Therefore, may we be of the poor in spirit who trustingly rely on the Lord for dealing with our bankrupt condition and paying the debt we could never pay!
Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING OUR NEED AND PRAISING THE LORD FOR ALL HE HAS DONE ON OUR ACCOUNT!
Carl
