A “preemptive strike” refers to action taken before other actions take place. As this expression is primarily used in connection with warfare, it is defined as “an attack against an enemy in response to an obvious threat of attack by that enemy.” However, can we see how this can also be associated with the battle over the flesh and its inclinations; the warfare against temptation? What could be considered as a “preemptive strike” against such?
Recently I have e-mailed an individual a couple times in the morning, letting them know I was keeping them in prayer with regard to a struggle they have faced. I let them know I had prayed for them to keep focusing forward, to keep looking to the Lord for strength to distance from temptation and to focus on righteousness. I wanted to encourage the keeping of their focus onward and upward. That was the “preemptive strike” of prayer on their behalf.
Is that not what Jesus also did for Peter? We read. . .
“ (31) Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, (32) but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:31-32 ESV)
Jesus knew what Simon Peter would face. Jesus knew the struggle he would encounter. And Jesus encouraged Peter of the role that would remain there for him. Before going out to the garden where Jesus was arrested and led away to be tried and crucified, He had also prayed for the rest of the disciples. (John 17: 9, 11 & 15) Jesus engaged in the “preemptive strike” of prayer.
Before we are in the midst of temptation — understanding the struggle of such spiritual warfare ready to strike against us — let us engage in preemptive prayer. And on behalf of others, let us let them know we are continuing in preemptive prayer for them. The battle is real. The warfare of the flesh can be fierce. Look for and utilize the way of escape provided by God (1 Corinthians 10:13) and seek His strength to resist. Remain steadfast in prayer!
As James urged. . .
“(7) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (8) Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:7-8 ESV)
Prayer is a vital part of the battle plan. (Ephesians 6:18) May our prayerful resolve for self and our prayer for others be to surrender (or submit) not to the flesh, but to God and His Sovereign Will!
Have a great day STRIKING FIRST WITH PRAYER!
