In Isaiah we read of King Hezekiah becoming sick and being told he was going to die of the sickness. (Isaiah 38:1) However, Hezekiah prayed and was told his life would be lengthened fifteen years. (Isaiah 38:2-6) Then we read the instruction. . .
“(21) Now Isaiah had said, “Let them take a cake of figs and apply it to the boil, that he may recover.”” (Isaiah 38:21 ESV)
Though Hezekiah applied his heart toward prayer to God, there was an instruction regarding a physical medical application for his healing. Even today health products such as medicines and ointments come with instructions for application such as “apply to wound three times daily”. Applying in accordance with the directions is important for bringing the best and quickest healing.
When it comes to our spiritual health, following the application instructions is also of utmost importance. In his first letter to the church at Corinth, after addressing proper stewardship of the message, Paul stated. . .
“(6) I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another.” (1 Corinthians 4:6 ESV)
The Greek word translated “applied” comes from “metaschematizo” which means to change in fashion or appearance. [source: W. E. Vine] In applying God’s Word to our life we are to become fashioned after it; to live a life after its likeness. Are we continuing to accept God’s Word as it is and properly applying it to ourselves for daily living to the glory of God? To either add to it or take away from it, its composition will not be as God intended and we will not receive the healthy spiritual benefit our life needs. To promote proper healing of the soul and preserving the holy essence of our life (i.e. 1 Peter 1:15-16) God’s Word must be applied according to His prescribed manner. May we continue faithfully applying it daily!
Have a great day FOLLOWING THE GREAT PHYSICIAN’S INSTRUCTIONS!
