To renew something is to make it like new or restore it to its original condition such as might be done with a piece of furniture or jewelry. To renew something is also to be granted an extension such as continuing the terms of a lease or holding onto a library book beyond the original checkout period. To renew is also used of reviving energy such as would come from a night’s rest or a vacation from work. These reflect the ideas of both outward and inward renewal. And though each of these aspects of renewal are wonderful to behold or are a blessing to experience, there is spiritual renewal of which God has provided the means which should be of the greatest encouragement.
After spending time doing physical labor, sometimes all it takes to make me feel better is to take a shower and put on clean clothes. Though an outward thing, there is a sense of refreshment that goes with it. Outward renewal has taken place. Considering this in a spiritual sense, we need to remember God’s design for humanity was being created in His image. (Genesis 1:26-27) However, the filth of sin mars that image. There is the need for change. There is the need for renewal. A reminder of such a transition was noted by Paul where we read. . .
“(9) Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices (10) and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” (Colossians 3:9-10 ESV)
Paul was reminding these Christians of moving away from such practices because the old self (the one in the dirty clothes) had been put off and the new self (the one clothed in spiritual garments such as noted in Colossians 3:12-14) had been put on in Christ. When we were baptized into Christ, we put Him on. (Galatians 3:27) This ought to bring an obvious change to our outward manner of living based on the knowledge of the image of our Creator we are intended to possess. As the renewal begins in our mind may the newness in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17-18) continue being reflected more and more in our daily life!
Have a great day LIVING AS ONE CLOTHED IN CHRIST!
