When someone is noted for taking the road less traveled, it generally refers to having chosen the least popular or less common option. It reflects the independent choice to not follow the crowd. Rather than conforming to the dictates of the world around them, such people choose to hold to their own individual identity. Though it might seem easier to walk on the most beaten path, simply going with the crowd is not always indicative of the best pathway for life. Now, being independent for independence sake and seeking to stand alone may not necessarily always be the right choice, however, when the focus is on that which is of the greater good and of the truth, it is the choice that ought to be made.
Jesus said it this way:
“(13) Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. (14) For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13-14 ESV)
What Jesus noted here is not that God desires this stark contrast, but due to the choices people make, this is sadly the reality. Many are choosing life pathways that are not leading to where they might think! In light of this truth, someone has said, “There is never any traffic congestion on the straight and narrow road.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]
Where have we chosen to walk? Are we going with the crowd? Are we caving to conformity with the world or surrendering to the transformation God brings (Romans 12:2) as we follow on the path of His Will? Though it may not be the easiest path, it is the path on which God aids and sustains us in the journey leading through life to the ultimate eternal life He assures us in Christ. May we choose to enter through Christ (i.e. John 10:9), identifying our life with Him as the Lord and Good Shepherd of our life, and follow on safely in His flock!
Have a great day JOURNEYING ON WITH JESUS!
Carl
