“Rules Of Engagement” generally refer to orders military personal are given regarding what they can and cannot do when engaged in battle. The specifics relate to things such as who can be shot at and under what circumstances, what infrastructure can be targeted, what weapons can be used, required aid or protection of civilians, and the treatment and transfer of prisoners. However, in the engagement of war, rules are not always followed on all sides.
Even in life in general there are “rules of engagement” not followed by all and thus we often find ourselves in the midst of conflict with others. Acknowledging we have no control over how others may choose to behave, we are still to remain mindful of the “rules of engagement” as God would have us engage with others.
Among the greatest personal battles may be that of the tongue. James noted how even wild beasts have been tamed while the tongue has often remained wild. (James 3:7-8) He also noted the unnatural inconsistency or variation of what comes from it. (James 3:9-12) Someone has advised, “Choose to engage your mind before engaging your mouth.” (original source unknown) Wise counsel?
James provided something to give serious consideration to where we read. . .
“(26) If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.” (James 1:26 ESV)
Let us understand it is a matter of the heart. It is the heart — the source from which our words flow — that must be guarded. (Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 15:18-19)
Paul also urged. . .
“ (29) Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:29 ESV)
Let us remain mindful of God’s “rules of engagement” with others (i.e. Romans 12:18-21; Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 4:15; Ephesians 4:32; Colossians 3:12-14) so that our interaction can be a gracious blessing. May we continually give thought to our words and how we engage with those around us!
Have a great day ENGAGING WITH OTHERS IN A GRACIOUS AND GOD GLORIFYING MANNER!
