In a psalm where David expressed his looking to the Lord God as his rock and protection in life, we read. . .
“3For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me; 4you take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge. 5Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.” (Psalm 31:3-5 ESV)
David found comfort in having committed his spirit into the hand of God. Does that surrender sound familiar? As David expressed this in relation to the living of his life, our Lord also expressed those words in view of His death.
We read. . .
“(44) It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, (45) while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. (46) Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.” (Luke 23:44-46 ESV)
As we look at the earthly journey of Jesus, we should see how it was one long act of surrendered obedience to the Divine plan. We see this even in His early years as a child, in being submissive to Joseph and Mary. (Luke 2:51) That submissive spirit continued through His ministry as He did nothing on His own, but focused on fulfilling the Will of Him Who had sent Him and by that authority. (i.e. John 5:30; John 8:28) And that submission was proved or revealed perfectly in His surrender to death. With a submissive spirit, Jesus walked the walk of His walk in the flesh and the years of His ministry leading ultimately toward His death on the cross.
As David expressed the commitment of his spirit to God in life and our Lord expressed the same in view of His death on the cross, let us acknowledge how when we also have committed our spirit to God in life we will be prepared to do so in death. This surrender to His protective and sustaining hands can be done in knowing death is not the end, but our spirit will be sustained on into a blessed eternity with Him! May that surrendered commitment be now so that when the time comes for us to breathe our last, we have the blessed assurance of the continued safety in our Father’s Heavenly Hands!
Have a great day TRUSTING ABSOLUTELY THE SPIRIT’S SAFETY IN BEING SURRENDERED TO GOD!
