Shared work goes easier and can bring good results. (i.e. Ecclesiastes 4:9) However, shared work should be seen as such and not result in thinking our part of it was more significant than that of others. This is no more true than when we think of the work of evangelism.
Following Jesus’ discussion with the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus noted the harvest about to be reaped; the believing Samaritans who would be coming out of Sychar to see and hear Him themselves. (John 4:39-42) In drawing attention to the work, Jesus stated to His disciples. . .
“(35) Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. (36) Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. (37) For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ (38) I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” (John 4:35-38 ESV)
Here Jesus acknowledged varying roles at various points within the work with each one being significant. This is the same thing Paul addressed with Christians at Corinth because of the divisiveness among them. (1 Corinthians 3:5-7) The need is to humbly acknowledge how each part works together toward the same goal. When we have the opportunity to sow, sow. When we have the opportunity to water, nurture the growth in the knowledge of the truth. When we have the opportunity to reap, let us recognize the time is ripe and do so. It is the work of God in which we are engaged, and He is the One Who brings the increase by the power He has placed in the seed of His Word. As we remember we are together “God’s fellow workers” (1 Corinthains 3:9), may He be glorified as we serve the varied roles that bring others to the Lord!
Have a great day WILLINGLY WORKING TOGETHER TO GOD’S GLORY!
