SIZING UP!

August 23, 2023 by Carl Hanson

David and Goliath! Though familiar with the story, are we remembering the lesson? As the Philistines gathered against the army of Israel, at the sight of Goliath the army was greatly afraid. (1 Samuel 17:11) Even Saul who was head and shoulders taller than any of the people (1 Samuel 9:2; 10:23) felt small compared to Goliath who was taller. (1 Samuel 17:4) However, David — who was but a youth (1 Samuel 17:33) — would have been smaller still. Nevertheless, he was ready to take on Goliath because of a perspective much higher than anyone else; one focused on the Lord Who had delivered him before. (1 Samuel 17:37)

As David approached, we read. . .

“(45) Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. (46) This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, (47) and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”” (1 Samuel 17:45-47)

David compared Goliath neither to himself, nor to tall Saul, but to the God above all! The battle was not his own, but belonged to the LORD Who would bring the victory!

Writing to the church at Rome, Paul encouraged. . .

“(31) What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (32) He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:31-32 ESV)

Yes! God is for us! He clearly demonstrated that by lovingly sending His Son on our behalf. Therefore, just like David, whatever the “Goliath” might be we are facing in life, may we remember to size it up in comparison to God Who will ultimately bring us through victoriously!

Have a great day REMEMBERING WHO FIGHTS FOR US!

Our Mission

Truth For Teens was originally a publication with a circulation of over 500 to youth throughout the United States.  This was possible because a group of men and women felt a need to provide healthy, helpful information to our youth as they deal with daily situations.

That need has not changed. The Central church of Christ at Pflugerville, Texas has decided to oversee this continuing, important ministry with this website and publication of a regular newsletter available to all teens around the world. We want the truth of God to be available as the “truth for teens” as well!
