Have you ever tried to catch and compare snowflakes? They say no two are exactly alike and each is beautiful in its own way. Do you ever compare yourself to someone else at school or someone you see on social media?
We are unique individuals, each with our own beauty and talents. We each have different life experiences and trials we have had to go through or are going through. The more we compare ourselves to each other the more we are going to be dissatisfied with ourselves and our life and that gives Satan the chance to sway us and cause us to spiral. “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice” (James 3:16, ESV). We are all precious to God and he made us all unique like the snowflakes.
We all feel insecure even if we don’t show it, but the truth of the matter is we need to learn to be content with ourselves and keep trying to do our best: “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I am, to be content” (Philippians 4:11, ESV). In Galatians 6:4, we learn to be content with ourselves by testing or comparing our own work against ourselves not against others. Also, we find part of the answer in Colossians 3:1-3: “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (ESV).
We all are not athletes, or the most popular, or the smartest one, etc. Just because someone “has” something you feel you are not, do you really know what is fully going on with that person? If we try to join up with people that may get us in the group we think we want to be in we need to make sure if we know what they are really about and do not simply become friends with them for the sake of belonging without knowing the people completely and what they stand for: “Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals” (1 Corinthians 15:33, ESV). It doesn’t pay to start hanging with the group just to feel included. It may help at first but is it worth jeopardizing your soul.
Instead of comparing yourself to others you need to compare yourself to what God expects from you. The only way to find that out is to keep studying the Bible and focus on God’s word. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33, ESV).
