Some have referred to “religion” as a crutch. Though all may not define “religion” the same way, true “religion” connected to God and the truth of His Word does serve well to hold us up rather than being left to limp through life based on human wisdom. We need His support! We need help in being held up!
The writer of Psalm 119 prayed. . .
“(117)Hold me up, that I may be safe and have regard for your statutes continually!” (Psalm 119:117 ESV)
In seeking God to hold him up and keep him safe, the psalmist did so with constant regard for the commands of God. He humbly acknowledged his need and knew the One to Whom he needed to look!
We need to humbly consider our life in the same manner. There is no need to hobble through life when God has provided His guidance and wisdom through His Word. He has provided a stable path to follow. It is God’s Divine Wisdom which is able to keep our feet from slipping (i.e. Psalm 37:31) if we are willing to accept His support! When Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal, he asked the people, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions?” (1 Kings 18:21) It was time to decide who they were going to follow. God’s power was then ultimately displayed as superior!
Remember Jeremiah’s declaration where we read. . .
“(23) I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps. (24) Correct me, O Lord, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.” (Jeremiah 10:23-24 ESV)
Without the truth, I cannot stand. Without the truth, I cannot walk. On my own I would be left to wander like a lost sheep. I must remember I am merely a branch supported by the root (Romans 11:18) from which the sustaining spiritual nourishment for my life comes from the Lord and that is where I must remain. Unless a decisive decision is made, life will be marked by the wavering between varied ideologies and opinions. I will choose God, the One Who has the power to continue holding me up as I continue walking in His Way! May you also seek to be so supported!
Have a great day HUMBLY RELYING ON THE SUPPORT GOD PROVIDES!
Carl
