Returning home one evening about a week ago, I noticed the power was out over a several block area as I was nearing our neighborhood. However, as I pulled up in front of our house, I saw that our living room appeared well illuminated. Walking through the front door I noticed three battery lanterns my wife had strategically placed at levels around the living room providing light for the whole room and into our dining area.
As Jesus taught. . .
“(14) You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. (15) Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. (16) In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 ESV)
Jesus noted the strategic placement of light. It cannot do its thing if it is hidden. Nor can it provide its best lighting unless lifted up so as to create less shadows and thus bring illumination for all in the house.
Jesus’ point was that “in the same way” we are to consider how our life is to also be a light in this world. This cannot take place by hiding away from the world, but as we walk amongst it, the actions of our life are to provide light directing the attention toward God to Whom we have surrendered our life and for Whom we are striving to live in accordance with His Will. Let us consider how we have been strategically placed wherever we are to be that light; to illuminate the truth of His Word as we go about our daily life. Our place within our family, neighborhood, school, workplace, or wherever we are is where we are to shine with the hope others will be drawn to glorify God.
Though some around us may try to shame us for standing in accordance with the standards of God, let us stand with head held up to fulfill the illuminating function we are urged to provide. Remembering that light is more powerful than darkness, may we allow it to do its thing in and through us to the praise and glory of God!
Have a great day SHINING WHERE YOU ARE!
