Sometimes a short, succinct statement made about someone can tell us a lot about them. This is no more true than what was noted regarding Jesus at the time of the death of Lazarus.
We read. . .
“(35) Jesus wept.” (John 11:35 ESV)
Two words noting a great attribute of our Lord. Though Jesus had acknowledged Lazarus’ illness was not going to end in death but would be an opportunity for glorifying God (John 11:4), He was still touched by the sorrow being experienced by others. (John 11:33) He didn’t tell Martha or Mary or the others weeping to suck it up and watch what was going to happen next. What was witnessed first was Jesus joining them in their sorrow. And while the response from some was to wonder why He hadn’t exercised some of His power to have kept Lazarus from dying (John 11:37), others who saw His tenderness responded, “See how he loved him!” (John 11:36)
That’s our Lord! He does love! He does care! Because Jesus was willing to take on flesh and share our human experience (i.e. Philippians 2:7; Hebrews 2:14; Hebrews 5:7), we should clearly see we have a Lord who does sympathize with our human experience. (i.e. Hebrews 4:15) He is touched! And because Jesus is touchable, He is also approachable for the mercy and grace we need. (Hebrews 4:16) May we grow in a greater understanding of both the reality and the depth of meaning in those two words: “Jesus wept”!
Have a great day FINDING COMFORT IN THE CHRIST WHO CARES!
