“I’ll do it myself.” “Back off. I’ve got this!” “I’m fine. I don’t need any help.” “Just give me a moment and I’ll get back up myself.” “I’ll just sit here for a bit while I’m down.”
While there are those who do accept the help, sometimes that is the way some individuals respond when they have fallen and are offered assistance by another. When it comes to stumbling or tripping on a curb, it seems it most often happens when others are looking and there goes our pride. And it does take a sense of humility to graciously accept another’s help up. Sometimes that is exactly our need; to swallow our pride and surrender to assistance.
Solomon wrote. . .
“(9) Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. (10) For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 ESV)
It is a blessing of assistance from a companion being noted here. However, how often is pride allowed to get in the way? We are fooling ourselves when we say we do not need each other and especially when we begin to feel we don’t need God’s help!
Throughout the Gospels we read of people not left where they were found, but uplifted and encouraged forward. (i.e. John 5:14; John 8:11; John 9:35-39) Whether it be for either physical or spiritual uplifting, let us not allow pride to keep us down, but humbly acknowledge we cannot make it on our own. We do need each other. And we most of all need the Lord. It is in humbling ourselves before Him that the door is opened for the exalting He is able and desires to bring to our life.
James exhorted. . .
“(10) Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” (James 4:10 ESV)
Let us remain willing to swallow our pride and surrender to His help! May we humbly trust in what the Lord is able to make of our life as we follow Him onward and upward!
Have a great day UPLIFTED BY THE HAND OF THE LORD!
