“I just want to be happy.” That is the sentiment of many in what is often a fleeting pursuit because what is often pursued are things which are neither truly good nor proper but are rather self-indulgent. In this sense personal appetite has become a god. (note Philippians 3:19) Are we driven for the moment or for what is more enduring?
It has been said, “Wanna be happy for an hour, eat a steak. Wanna be happy for a day, play golf. Wanna be happy for a week, go on a cruise. Wanna be happy for a lifetime, put your faith in Jesus Christ.” (Lou Holtz, American football coach)
David stated. . .
“ (1) Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. (2) Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.” (Psalm 32:1-2 ESV)
The Hebrew word translated “blessed” can also refer to “happiness” or “good fortune.” David noted such a person as not the one enjoying sin, but the one who knew they had received forgiveness from it. He would go on to note this blessing coming through the due acknowledgement and confession of the sin which then led to receiving the needed forgiveness. (Psalm 32:5) Without this blessing from God we are left in regret and remorse which only undermines the happiness we could experience.
Are we living for the moment or in each moment living for the lifetime leading into eternity with God? What marks our life pursuit? Is our pursuit an abiding relationship with God in accordance with the truth of His Will?
The first of the psalms begins with. . .
“(1) Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; (2) but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. (3) He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.” (Psalm 1:1-3 ESV)
Therein is the blessing of the properly centered focus; not living life our own way, but God’s way. May we remain rooted in His Will so that we can flourish in a life that is truly life leading on into a blessed and happy eternity with Him. What could be happier than living knowing we are doing so in His favor? May this remain our happy pursuit!
Have a great day TRUSTING WHAT LEADS TO GOD’S HAPPY EVER AFTER!
