It is appropriate and right to honor others. (i.e. Romans 12:10; 13:7) However, that is not to be done without duly honoring the One to be honored above all!
Note a charge against God’s people during the days of the prophet Malachi where we read. . .
“(6) A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is my fear? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. But you say, ‘How have we despised your name?’ (7) By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that the Lord’s table may be despised. (8) When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the Lord of hosts.” (Malachi 1:6-8 ESV)
What was generally an expectation was occurring, but God was not receiving His due! Though fathers and masters were being honored, where was God’s? God was actually being dishonored by being offered what they would not have even considered trying to get by with offering to a human leader. (vs.8) When we give others our best and give God our “leftovers” — whether that be of our energy, service, thought, time, etc. — what does that say about how we view Him?
Remember Jesus’ exhortation. . .
“(37) Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. (38) And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37-38 ESV)
Yes, the love is to be there for others, but it is to be most of all for Him! May the offering of our life (i.e. Romans 12:1) reflect we truly do love and honor the Lord! It is the most honorable way to live!
Have a great day LIVING HONORABLY BY HONORING GOD ABOVE ALL!
