That which stinks, we generally draw away from. It is not pleasant to hang around uncomfortable smells. However, if the stink is on ourselves, it will follow us wherever we go unless we change our clothes and clean up. Such is also the need when it comes to stinking thinking.
At the time of Noah, we read. . .
“(5) The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Genesis 6:5 ESV)
What an awful picture of humanity’s focus. And it grieved God. Therefore, the whole earth was cleansed by water.
At the time of Jeremiah, the question arose. . .
“ (14) O Jerusalem, wash your heart from evil, that you may be saved. How long shall your wicked thoughts lodge within you?” (Jeremiah 4:14 ESV)
Though Jerusalem was the place where God’s Name resided, it was “wicked thoughts” that had taken up residency there. Within the holy city was that which was unholy! Therefore, the besieging and captivity that would come, was brought upon themselves. (Jeremiah 4:16-18) Stinking thinking had no place where the temple of God was established. And as we acknowledge ourselves as the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), we must be mindful of the aspects of our life which do not match up with that designation; our actions and our thoughts.
In his letter to Christians at Philippi, Paul urged. . .
“(
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8 ESV)
Paul went on to note that such a focus and the practicing of what they had learned would bring the peace of God to them. (Philippians 4:9) That is the result of living in a right relationship with God and His Will! Let us continually give due thought to our thoughts since it is from them that our actions will arise and our mouth will speak!
As David expressed. . .
“(14) Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14 ESV)
Yes, may that be so with us to the glory of God and the blessing of our daily life!
Have a great day REMAINING MINDFUL OF RESIDENT THOUGHT!
Carl
