TODAY!
Have you heard the expression: “TODAY is the TOMORROW you worried about YESTERDAY.”?
Today is important to focus on because we have no power over yesterday. That time has passed and there is no way to call it back to be relived. Tomorrow is a possibility, but it is not for certain, and thus is also beyond our grasp. Though we trust in a promised eternity, we can only live in the day at hand.
In the model prayer Jesus gave when giving His “sermon on the mount”, there was a focus on today. Jesus said. . .
“(11) Give us this day our daily bread,” (Matthew 6:11 ESV)
Jesus’ model prayer did not say, “fill our cupboards and warehouse to take us through another year.” This was a part of the prayer that focused on the daily needs with a trust in God’s provision for the day.
Later in this same chapter we read Jesus’ words following His teaching on anxiety or worry:
“(34) Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34 ESV)
Since each day has enough to focus on and take care of, why borrow from the next? Tomorrow will come as tomorrow will come. Understand, however, Jesus was not ruling out any planning for the future, but rather dealing with anxiety over things and days to come. Focusing on and properly taking care of the things of today will take the anxiety out of the tomorrows God may give us and allow us to reflect on the yesterdays with peace and satisfaction.
Have a great TODAY ENTRUSTING GOD WITH YOUR FUTURE!
