There are many types of training we can undergo relating to preparation for employment or for life in general. When it comes to our physical health, among the trainings in which people engage are resistance and strength training, cardiovascular training, flexibility training, balance training, and sport-specific training. Combined, these provide a well-rounded exercise program for the enhancement of body fitness and health. And though there is benefit to duly acknowledge in such, we must never forget the significance of our spiritual health in the same way. We were created as physical beings but are to also remember we are spiritual beings created in the likeness of God. (Genesis 1:27) Therefore, beyond body image we must consider our life image as God intended and for which He also provides the means for its enhancement and renewal. (2 Corinthians 3:18; 2 Corinthians 5:17)
In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he wrote. . .
“(7) Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; (8) for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:7-8 ESV)
With a focus on training in godliness, we grow in the strengthening of our faith (1 Corinthians 16:13; 2 Thessalonians 1:3) and the ability to resist the devil (James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8-9; Ephesians 6:11); we enhance the spiritual condition of our heart to sustain proper living (Matthew 5:8; Mark 12:30; 1 Timothy 1:5; 1 Peter 1:22); we develop greater flexibility to lead us through life’s varied scenes with greater patience (James 5:7) and peace (Philippians 4:7); we learn to have better balance in life priorities (Matthew 6:33; 2 Timothy 2:4-7); and we are thus engaging in life-specific training that relates to life presently and eternally (1 Timothy 4:8). Continuing in this training of godliness, we are then prepared to present a godly example in our speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity (1 Timothy 4:12) not only for other Christians, but also for the world around us. May we continue in this spiritual regimen that has value in every way!
Have a great day CONTINUING THE TRAINING IN GODLINESS!
Carl
