Following another can be hindered by many things. We may be hindered first of all by having no desire to follow. We may also be so comfortable with where we are we are not willing to follow on. We may also be hindered from following because we are too tied to things we do not want to leave behind. Is any of this reflected in our connection with the Lord?
It has been said, “The reason why many are still troubled, still seeking, still making little forward progress is because they haven’t yet come to the end of themselves. We’re still trying to give orders, and interfering with God’s work within us.” (A. W. Tozer)
Are we still allowing ourselves — own aspirations and desires, personal life comfort zones, cherished possessions, etc. — to hold us back from the spiritual journey before us? Have we failed to come to the end of ourselves to accept the ends to which God is striving to develop our life and lead us? Are we a disciple of Jesus or a disciple of self?
Jesus exhorted. . .
“(23) And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (24) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. (25) For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?” (Luke 9:23-25 ESV)
Who did Jesus say this to? To all! Am I listening? Are you? The following leading to greater things relative to living now (John 10:10) and eternal life to come (Luke 18:30) begins very close to home with the denial of self. It is with our whole being we are to embrace Jesus so as to follow Him to the end (i.e. Matthew 10:22) regardless of what crosses we might bear along the way! Having died to self and allowing Christ to be our life (Colossians 3:3-4) we can press on in expectation of sharing with Him in eternal glory. Fully surrendered in discipleship to Jesus, may we allow Him to make us all He desires us to be!
Have a great day LIVING TO THE ENDS OUR LORD DESIRES!
Carl
