We live in a world of users, abusers, and accusers and when we are used, abused, and accused, it is generally not a pleasant experience. Those are things we like to avoid. However, before we too quickly excuse ourselves, let us be honest about our own moments when we have not responded appropriately or treated others as we ought.
Paul reminded his readers in Rome. . .
“(23) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (24) and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,” (Romans 3:23-24 ESV)
John also wrote. . .
“(8) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (10) If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” (1 John 1:8-10 ESV)
We are all imperfect beings, but God has provided the means through Christ to adequately deal with our sins as we repent and walk on in the life and light of Christ. (1 John 1:7) Since we are all in need of God’s grace — though others may not always be gracious toward us — as Christians it is to be part of our character from which we act toward others. Remember, we have not been called to treat others as they have treated us, but to treat them as we wish to be treated. (Matthew 7:12) It may not be the natural inclination, but it is our spiritual calling.
As God has not treated us as our sins deserve, let us guard against thinking we need to give everyone their due based on their treatment of us. Leave that in His hands. (Romans 12:14, 17-21) Duly grateful to God for having graciously received the grace we have needed, may we also be gracious toward others!
Have a great day COMPELLED BY GOD’S GRACE TO ALSO BE GRACIOUS!
