What weighs sixty to seventy grams but can be quite heavy, has no bones but can be hard hitting, and is soft and pliable yet capable of breaking a heart or spirit? It is the tongue. James noted it as having great power in need of control (James 3:5-6) because its power can either be well used or sadly abused. In the use of the tongue there can be great contrast in its utterances.
Solomon noted a stark contrast in stating. . .
“(21) Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” (Proverbs 18:21 ESV)
Yes, such diverse impact can stem from that tiny member of the body. James also noted great contrast in its use (James 3:9-10); that which is not a natural expectation in nature (James 3:11-12) but is unfortunately too often the nature of the human tongue. It should not be so!
Have we not all had occasion when we have misspoken and found ourselves having to eat our words; the fruit of our lips? Are we minding the spring from which our words are drawn? Giving due consideration to the power of the tongue for either good or ill — in order to speak in a manner in which the fruit of our lips will be something good, fitting, and beneficial (i.e. Ephesians 4:29; Colossians 4:6) — may we seek God’s help in harnessing the tongue’s power!
Have a great day SEEKING TO MAINTAIN A GOD TAMED TONGUE!
