Solomon wrote. . .
“(15) The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” (Proverbs 12:15 ESV)
And. . .
“(10) By insolence comes nothing but strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom.” (Proverbs 13:10 ESV)
The Greek word translated “insolence” is “zadown”, which Strong’s Lexicon notes as referring to pride, insolence, presumptuousness, and arrogance. Our English word “insolence” is defined as “a haughty attitude or insulting act”. [Webster’s Dictionary] When one has too high an estimation of self, there is generally a lack of openness to what others might say or have to offer of benefit. There might even be rudeness which can then open the door to the strife or conflict. Being willing to listen politely is wise because we never know from whom we might hear something that is beneficial to us.
Solomon also stated. . .
“ (9) Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.” (Proverbs 9:9 ESV)
Though we ought to listen with discretion, let us never think we are so wise as to not need advice. It is the openness of the wise that leads to greater wisdom. May we maintain a sense of humility for listening, learning, and living wisely!
Have a great day LISTENING RIGHT TO LIVE RIGHT!
